The following videos outline all of the Common Core Math Strategies we teach in 2nd Grade. Instead of teaching the standard algorithm in 2nd grade, we use strategies that are based on the concept of place value. Please be sure to watch the Introduction video before watching any of the strategy videos to help you better understand all of the terms used in the videos.
Although some parents become frustrated with these strategies because they are very different from what we learned in school, they are hugely beneficial for your child. Students are learning how numbers are related and can be composed and decomposed, developing an authentic sense of numbers. Learning multiple strategies equips students with different tools and gives them ownership over their learning. They get to choose what strategies they feel the most comfortable using in the different situations with various equations. We as the teachers, struggled through these strategies at first, but now see how wonderful and beneficial they truly are, and know you will also. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher if you have any further questions. Thank you for you support!
